Understanding the difference helps you build the right support team for your birth journey.
A trained non-medical professional providing continuous physical, emotional, and informational support before, during, and shortly after childbirth. Doulas do NOT deliver babies — they walk beside you every step of the way. DONA International studies show doulas lead to remarkably improved outcomes for both mother and baby.
A licensed medical professional who provides clinical care and informational support before, during, and after birth — in the comfort of your home. RN-level care (L&D and postpartum/nursery) becomes accessible to families who desire care outside of a medical facility. Concierge RNs may evaluate labor but do NOT deliver babies.
A licensed medical provider who provides complete care during the reproductive year as well as care of the newborn outside of the hospital. Midwifery Model of Care results in a cesarean rate of just 5% compared to 33% with the Obstetric Model. Certified Professional Midwives DO deliver babies at home or in birth centers.
Position ideas, counter pressure, breathing techniques, and comfort measures to help labor progress and ease discomfort.
Creating a nurturing space where birth hormones can work at their best — whether unmedicated or medically complex.
Supporting every birth partner in being as involved as they'd like — the partner's experience matters in birth too.
Connecting families with evidence-based resources so they can ask great questions and advocate for the best care.

Greatest experience ever! My daughter had her second baby and Lydia was there from beginning to end. Her knowledge and bedside manner was the bombdigity! I had questions and she had answers. The comfort she gave was awesome.
Lydia was and is such a blessing. Breastfeeding was a very big challenge but she pushed me to keep going. It was so helpful having her to talk to and learn from. I'd recommend her without a doubt.
I would most definitely recommend Lydia because the work she does is truly amazing. I have never met a doula who was more compassionate and sincere. She was so thorough and explained things perfectly. Anyone who has a kid on the way — she is the best at this, I have seen honestly.
